Immerse yourself in the world of amber at the Deutsches Bernsteinmuseum - Kloster in Ribnitz. This museum, housed within a medieval monastery, features an impressive collection of 1,600 exhibits that delve into the natural and cultural history of Baltic amber. From flora and fauna preserved for millions of years to amber art spanning from the Neolithic period to the present day, there's plenty to explore. The museum also showcases the lost Königsberg amber art from the early 20th century.
The monastery is a small treasure itself. A significant portion of its medieval furnishings remains intact, including a selection of Gothic sculptures, predominantly from the 14th century. An additional exhibition provides insight into the rich history of the monastery.
To further enhance your visit, the museum offers a workshop where you can try your hand at grinding and polishing amber. The workshop includes a demonstration of amber processing and the creation of amber jewellery and art objects. This hands-on experience makes the museum visit particularly engaging for children, ensuring it's an outing that will be enjoyed by all ages.
